🧬 What is a "Segment"?

When you share DNA with a match, you share physical blocks of code on your chromosomes. These blocks are called segments. We measure the size of these segments in a unit called Centimorgans (cM). The larger the shared segment, the more recently you shared an ancestor.

🎲 What is "Recombination"?

You inherit exactly 50% of your DNA from each parent, but which 50% you get is completely random. This shuffling process is called recombination. Because of this random shuffle, you don't inherit equal parts of your grandparents' DNA, and you may share 0% DNA with some distant cousins.
