Your ethnicity estimate does not come from analyzing ancient bones or historical census records. Instead, testing companies compare your DNA to a Reference Panel—a database of living individuals with deep, documented family roots in a specific geographic region. If your DNA matches genetic markers (SNPs) common in a reference group, you are assigned a corresponding percentage of that ethnicity.

To calculate your admixture, testing companies analyze hundreds of thousands of genetic markers called Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) across your autosomes (Chromosomes 1–22). They use complex algorithms to read these markers in blocks and compare them to their reference panels. This comparison is a statistical estimate of where your ancestors likely lived roughly 500 to 1,000 years ago.

Do not panic if you have a documented German great-grandmother but show 0% “German” on your report. Human populations did not live behind concrete borders, and genetic markers overlap heavily. A German ancestor may show up as “Northwestern Europe,” “England & Northwestern Europe,” or “Sweden & Denmark” on different platforms. Always evaluate the broad regional percentages rather than individual country labels.
Why Do My Ethnicity Percentages Keep Changing?
One of the most common points of confusion is when your genetic percentages suddenly shift overnight after a platform update. This is one of the most common DNA testing pitfalls that beginners misunderstand.
Your actual DNA never changes, but a company’s ability to analyze it does. As testing databases grow, companies add thousands of new individuals to their reference panels. Because of random recombination, you inherit exactly 50% of your DNA from each parent, but you do not inherit exactly 25% from each grandparent.
