Chromosome mapping is a genetic genealogy research method used to organize shared DNA segments and investigate which ancestral family lines may be associated with different parts of your genome.
By recording chromosome coordinates, segment length, matching relatives, and supporting evidence in a structured spreadsheet, you can build a clearer research record of the DNA segments you are investigating.
This template helps keep that information organized so you can compare segments, document evidence, and follow your research over time.
DNA segment research can quickly become difficult to manage when chromosome numbers, start and end positions, cM values, matching relatives, and ancestral hypotheses are recorded in different places.

Step-by-Step Chromosome Mapping Workflow
- Select a shared DNA segment from a compatible chromosome browser or DNA matching service.
- Record the chromosome number, start position, end position, and cM length in the worksheet.
- Record the matching relative or relatives associated with the segment.
- Add information about the suspected maternal or paternal ancestral line when supported by your research.
- Compare the segment with additional relatives when appropriate to investigate triangulation.
- Record your evidence, conclusions, and remaining questions in the notes fields.
Important: A Mapped Segment Is Not Automatically Proven Ancestry
Recording a DNA segment in a chromosome-mapping spreadsheet does not by itself prove that the segment came from a particular ancestor. Stronger conclusions generally require supporting evidence such as documented genealogy, appropriate DNA matches, segment comparisons, and triangulation where applicable. Use the template to document evidence and research hypotheses rather than treating every assignment as certain.

Does chromosome mapping prove that a DNA segment came from a specific ancestor?
Not by itself. A mapped segment is a research record, not automatically proof of a specific ancestral origin. The strength of an assignment depends on the supporting genealogical and genetic evidence.
Can I use the template in Google Sheets?
Yes. The template is provided as an .xlsx file and can generally be opened in Google Sheets and Apple Numbers, although some spreadsheet-specific features may behave differently between applications.
