DNA cluster analysis is a way of organizing your DNA matches according to shared relationships and connections. Instead of examining every match independently, clustering helps you look for groups of matches that may point toward the same ancestral family line.
A cluster can sometimes reveal a group of relatives connected through a particular branch of your family tree. By comparing shared matches, surnames, locations, documented genealogy, and other evidence, you can develop hypotheses about the ancestral origins of a group.
This Excel template gives you a structured place to record those observations and track your research as your understanding develops.
DNA matching results can become difficult to manage when you have hundreds or thousands of matches. Clustering helps reduce that complexity by organizing related matches into groups that can be investigated together.
When a cluster contains several matches who share genetic connections with one another, the group may provide clues about a common ancestral line. Additional genealogical and genetic evidence is then needed to determine what that connection may be.

Important: A DNA Cluster Does Not Automatically Equal One Ancestral Couple

A cluster can contain matches connected through different branches, multiple ancestral pathways, or relationships that are not immediately apparent. Use cluster membership as evidence that helps generate and test hypotheses alongside documented genealogy, shared matches, family trees, locations, surnames, and other genetic evidence.
